At least 12 areas in Luzon and Eastern Visayas were placed under Storm Signal No. 1 as tropical depression “Bebeng” moved northwest before noon Saturday.
But the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Bebeng is not likely to hit the National Capital Region directly.
“Hindi ito direkta tatama sa Metro Manila. Ito babaybay sa Southern Luzon … Maliban diyan di natin inaasahan na ito ay lalakas pa palapit sa kalupaan,” PAGASA forecaster Sonny Pajarilla said on government-run dzRB radio.
Citing PAGASA’s data, he said Bebeng may bring more rains and cloudy skies in the next 24 hours.
Areas to be affected include Southern Luzon, Bicol and the eastern part of the country, he added.
PAGASA’s 11 a.m. bulletin indicated Bebeng had maintained its strength as it now moves in a northwest direction.
As of 10 a.m., it said Bebeng was estimated at 180 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar, with maximum winds of 55 kph near the center.
It is moving northwest at 13 kph and is expected to be 50 km north of Virac, Catanduanes by Sunday morning.
By Monday morning, it is expected to be 80 km northwest of Casiguran, Aurora. By Tuesday morning it is forecast to be 200 km north-northwest of Laoag City.
The 12 areas under Storm Signal No. 1 are:
- Camarines Sur
- Camarines Norte
- Albay
- Catanduanes
- Sorsogon
- Masbate
- Ticao island
- Burias islands
- Polillo island
- Leyte
